Learning outcomes
The main aim of the subject is general description of the theory of internal structure of metals and alloys with deeper use of knowledge of metal physics for description of various processes taking place in materials and connection with various technological processes. Processes taking place in materials in the field of structure, substructure in connection with technological processes (casting, forming, machining, heat treatment). Changes within materials in structure and substructure due to technological processes and their influence on the overall properties of materials. Changes taking place in the material due to these internal processes and the path leading to the improvement of the material properties due to these processes. The course is focused on the following areas: 1. Fundamentals of crystallography. Internal structure of metals and alloys. 2. Dislocations - origin, movement of dislocations, dislocations of cast material, relationship between dislocations and properties material. Relationship between dislocations and plastic deformation during forming. 3. Methods and mechanism of metal strengthening. Precipitation hardened alloys. 4. Crystallization of metals and their alloys - origin of inhomogeneities and their elimination. 5. Diffusion in solids - nature, principle and mechanism of diffusion, parameters influencing diffusion and diffusion modes, diffusion coefficient etc. 6. Chemical - thermal treatment of metal surfaces and diffusion processes within the thermal treatment of metals (nitriding, cementing, boriding). 7. Fracture failure of material. Mechanism of fracture formation, types of fracture and their origin. The essence of fractography and its use.
