Course content
Macro / micro / nano - experimental investigation of materials structure - the principles of the image projection, imagine techniques of the light metallographic microscope. Perspective methods of the image capture and quantitative microstructure evaluation using image analysis. Fundamentals of crystallography. Diffraction phenomena in solid state: X-ray, electron and neutron diffraction. Principles of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and its application in sub-structural study of metals and alloys. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray microanalysis. Fundamentals and applications of fractography. Methods of the surface analysis: Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), Auger spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), electron spectroscopy. Methods of determination of phase transformations - thermal analysis, dilatometry. Corrosion and wear testing methods. Defectoscopy techniques. Acoustics emission. Mechanical testing methods.
