Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce the current debate on political extremism. First, we will introduce the basic theoretical approaches (Extremismstheory, Social identity theory, activism theory) and concepts (Hate crime). Next, the course will focus on the concept of militant democracy and its relation to extremism theory. Attention will also be paid to the critique of extremism theory and to the concept of Hate crime, which complements or replaces extremism theory.
The student is able to distinguish between the concepts of extremism and Hate Crime. The student identifies the main ideological currents in European society. The student is able to describe the basic approaches to the problem of radicalisation. The student is able to discuss the issue of freedom of speech and its possible limitations.

To successfully complete the course, the following is required: 1) Pre-Exam Credit: active participation in seminars (at least 75%), submission of seminar work; 2) Exam: a written exam in the form of a test verifying knowledge and understanding of the topics covered in the course.
