Course content
|
1. Introduction to the researched issues. 2. The relationship between politics and the media: normative expectations and their critique. 3. The function of the media in relation to politics and society. 4. Political news in the changes of time. 5. The current "crisis" of journalism and its impact on the quality of democracy. 6. Negativity in political news and political scandals as a current phenomenon of political news and their impact on the quality of democracy (media malaise, virtuous circle, etc.). 7. Management of visibility in the changes of time and under the influence of technological progress. 8. Spin doctoring and political public relations. 9. Colonization of media policy, media logic and media politicization. 10. Three ages of political communication. 11. Advent of Web 2.0 and social networks as the fourth age of political communication. 12. Populism and the (new) media: a threat to democracy or a tool for wider public participation. 13. The phenomenon of fake news. 14. Final colloquium.

Learning outcomes
|
The course focuses on the discussion of current issues of media relations and politics, both with regard to the prevailing current phenomena, such as permanent campaigns, negative campaigns or methods of spin-doctoring and political PR, and their impact on media behavior, political process and to the general public, as well as in a historical perspective in the context of the changes in this relationship. Last but not least, the explanation will focus on the use of Web 2.0 and new media in current political communication and the risks associated with it.
Knowledge: prevailing current phenomena such as permanent campaigns, negative campaigns or methods of spin-doctoring and political PR, and their impact on media behavior, the political process and the general public. Skills: active participation in professional discussion - writing critical professional essays

Assessment methods and criteria

For obtaining the credits it is required to obtain at least 5 points out of 13 possible, which can be obtained as follows: 1) submission of four polemical / critical essays on the given texts (critical interpretation / technical polemics with a text in the range of 2 to 3 NS), for each essay up to 2 points can be obtained; 2) activity at lectures, inter alia verifying fulfillment of reading given texts on individual lectures and orientation in current events in media-political events (max. 5 points); 3) participation in the final colloquium on 03/05/2023.
