Course content
|
1. Introductory lesson: introduction to the subject of study. 2. Theory of European integration I: federalism, neofunctionalism. 3. Theory of European integration II: intergovernmentalism, liberal intergovernmentalism. 4. History of European integration I. (European Coal and Steel Community, European Economic Community and Euratom; Community crisis and the so-called Luxembourg compromise; Schengen Agreement; Single European Act). 5. History of European integration II. (Treaty on European Union; Maastricht Treaty; Treaty of Amsterdam; Treaty of Nice; draft European Constitution; Treaty of Lisbon). 6. Enlargement of the European Union and the specifics of individual waves. 7. The political system of the European Union (Commission, Council, Parliament and other institutions and their relations). 8. Elections to the European Parliament in historical and theoretical perspective. 9. European Union policies. 10. The Czech Republic in the European Union. 11. Current problems of European integration I. (intergovernmental, EU and "community" method of integration, the issue of democratic and legitimate deficit of the Union and the possibility of introducing transnational lists of candidates). 12. Current problems of European integration II. (enlargement process and the issue of the Union's "absorption capacity", Euroscepticism, the Spitzenkandidat system, Brexit, the future direction of the integration project, etc.).

Learning outcomes
|
The course is first devoted to the introduction of a theoretical framework of reflections on European integration, which is then supplemented by a presentation of the development of European integration in a historical perspective with special attention to its key institutions, and concludes with an informed discussion on current issues and problems of European integration, incl. discussion on the possibility of its reforms.
The student is able to use professional terminology. The student distinguishes individual approaches to the study of European integration. The student is able to present and contextualize the development of European integration. The student is able to introduce individual institutions and their roles in the system of multilevel governance. The student is able to understand the current discussions on the possibilities of reform of the current setting of the European Union.
