Course content
1. Pre-Platonic political philosophy (Socrates, Plato). 2. Aristotle, political philosophy after Aristotle and the thinking of the Roman Republic. 3. Christian political thought, patristics (Augustine) and scholastics (Aquinas). 4. New foundation of political science (N. Machiavelli). 5. Classical theories of social contract (T. Hobbes, J. Locke). 6. French Enlightenment (Ch. De Montesquieu, J. J. Rousseau). 7. English Revolution 1640-1688, the struggle with absolutism and for religious tolerance, the theory of the republic. 8. The French Revolution and its political thinking, from the beginning to the Jacobin dictatorship. 9. The American Revolution and its political thinking, after the creation of the American federal constitution. 10. Reaction to the revolutions of the end of the 18th century. (E. Burke conservatism, A. de Tocqueville's aristocratic liberalism). 11. Enlightenment and deontological morality (I. Kant). 12. Analysis of politics in the modern age (K. Marx, M. Weber).

Learning outcomes
The course introduces the development of political thought from antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century. It presents the ideas of the most important political philosophers and their main works. It introduces the basic concepts of Western political philosophy. It offers an outline of the development of basic concepts, major thinkers and concepts associated with the development of Western political thought.
The student is able to use professional terminology. The student is able to characterize the specifics of political philosophy as an independent discipline. The student is able to clarify the basic concepts of political philosophy. The student distinguishes the main directions of questioning political philosophy. The student is able to characterize selected problems of political philosophy in various areas of development of the history of political thought. The student is able to place the most important problems of individual disciplines of political philosophy in the historical context.
