1. Historical types of non-democratic regimes. 2. Totalitarian regimes - theoretical-typological discussion. 3. Totalitarian regimes - empirical examples (communism, Nazism, fascism). 4. Authoritative regimes - theoretical-typological discussion. 5. Authoritarian regimes I. (J. J. Linz). 6. Authoritarian regimes II. (J. J. Linz). 7. Posttotalitarian regimes (J. J. Linz and A. Stepan). 8. Authoritarian regimes - militaristic authoritarian regimes. 9. Authoritarian regimes - theocratic authoritarian regimes, sultanist regimes. 10. Non-democratic regimes in the area of Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th century. 11. End of undemocratic regimes and transitions to democracy. 12. Consolidation of democracy. 13. Hybrid regimes.

Learning outcomes
|
The course is devoted to the issue of non-democratic regimes. It focuses on the introduction of the main types of non-democratic regimes and their transformation at the beginning of the 21st century. It also introduces the influence of the type of abolished (non-democratic) regime on the form of transition. Important attention is also paid to the classification of transition and the criteria for consolidating of democracy.
The student is able to use professional terminology. The student distinguishes between different types of non-democratic regimes. The student is able to compare internal development within individual types of non-democratic regimes. The student is able to evaluate the influence of the type of non-democratic regime on the process of transition to another type of regime. The student is able to classify different types of transition. The student is able to characterize the criteria of consolidation of democracy.

To successfully complete the course, it is required to submit a seminar paper in the range of 8 to 10 standard pages and successful completion of the exam.
