| Course content |
|
In this course, students will learn about the concepts of philosophy of history, which are based on the concept of the unconscious. We will start with an explanation of the foundations of Sigmund Freud's work and his work Totem and Taboo, Discontent in Culture and The Future of One Illusion. Then a bold attempt at a far-reaching deep-psychological interpretation by George Frankl will be presented. Archeology of the Mind: The Social History of the Unconscious. The centerpiece of our attention will be the work of the French historian and philosopher René Girard. The central concepts of his conception of triangular desire, mimetic rivalry, persecution stereotypes and the scapegoat mechanism will be explained and how they can interpret religious or power phenomena and explain the cyclical repetition of relative social peace and crisis. Girard's "mimetic theory" and the interpretative model of the "sacrifice mechanism" arising therefrom provides an extraordinary insight into the ways in which violence is regulated and unity is created within both primitive and modern societies.

Students will have an overview of the philosophy of history, will be able to interpret the role of collective violence in history and its sacrificial and persecution aspects, will understand the concept of unconscious and will know the basic concepts of deep psychology and the possibility of their application to questions of philosophy of history. |
