Course content
I.-II. Introduction to the topic of ancient political thinking (terminology, historical context, the polis and political thought, the beginnings of political reflection, political issues in Greek poetry, historiography and drama) III-VII. Plato (The Republic: the problem of justice, Physis versus Nomos, the analogy of city and soul, the project of the best city, decline of constitutional forms; The Statesman and The Laws: ruler and law, the relationship between the Republic and the Laws) VIII.-XII. Aristotle (links between ethics and politics; Politics: the naturalness of the polis and political nature of the man, natural relationships within oikia, the question of slavery, classification of constitutional forms, the best constitution) XIII. Comparison of Plato´s and Aristotle´s conceptual approach

Learning outcomes
The content of the course is political reflexion in the classical period of Greek philosophy. The course is based on the political writings of Plato and Aristotle, especially Plato's Republic and Laws and Aristotle's Politics. The course aims to present essential topics related to the integration of a man into the human community and compare the conceptual approaches of both philosophers. The course focuses on the following issues: the political character of Greek thinking - the concept of the polis - the project of ideal city - classification of constitutional types - establishment and critique of democracy - the role of education and the law - stasis and disintegration of the political system - the relationship between political and philosophical life.
Students will acquire the following academic knowledge: - can explain the historical origins of political reflection of the Greeks - can explain the basic concepts of political thinking - can explain how the general basis of political thought in ancient times is formulated: the idea of citizenship, the relationship between the individual and the city, the role of the state, conventionalist versus objective explanation of the political practice - get familiar with the structure of the fundamental works of ancient political thinking: Plato's Republic and Laws and Aristotle's Politics - can explain the critical themes of Plato's and Aristotle's political thinking

Assessment methods and criteria

75% participation in seminars is required. To obtain a credit: students work out a paper in written and orally presented form, using academic secondary literature (Czech, or foreign language), alternatively an essay on a given topic using primary and secondary sources.
