1. 19th century as a clash of conservatism, liberalism and socialism 2. E. Burke as a critic of the French revolution 3. G. W. F. Hegel: civil society and state 4. J. Bentham: utilitarianism and democracy 5. J. S. Mill: utilitarianism, freedom, the representative government, the subjection of women 6. Marx and the Paris Manuscripts 7. Marx and the historical materialism 8. M. Weber: neutrality in sciences, power -autority - state, the occidental rationalism 9. Political thought in the Czech lands in 19th and 20th century: T. G. Masaryk, E. Rádl, J. Patočka 10. C. Schmitt: the political in the world of technique 11. The phaenomenon of totalitarianism and the attempts to overcome it 12. The neoclassical political philosophy (H. Arendt, E. Voegelin, L. Strauss) 13. Liberal critics of totalitarianism: R. Aron and F. A. Hayek

Learning outcomes
Students will be acquinted with the main political ideologies in 19th and 20th century: conservatism, liberalism and socialism-communism. It will be stressed the positive contribution of these ideologies to the history of political thought, but at the same time they can have destructive tendencies. Students will be acquinted with basic ideas of Max Weber, Carl Schmitt, T. G. Masaryk, E. Rádl and J. Patočka. Special attention will be given to the theory of totalitarianism and the attempts to overcome it by neo-classical political philosophers (Arendt, Voegelin, Strauss) and by liberal thinkers (R. Aron and F. A. Hayek).
Student will acquire following competences: - ability to judge critically political theories and thinkers from 19th to the first half of the 20th century - will be able to write an informed essay about the political thought from 19. to the first half of the 20th century.

The credit will be given for the oral defence of the paper. The paper must be at least 8 pages long (14400 characters including spaces and footenotes) and its topic should be selected from the the main topics of the course.
