Course content
Early Christianity, Tertullianus; Ambrosius; Early Middle Ages in the West and East (byzantine ideology); medieval image of king; the imperial power and papacy; Přemysl dynasty and the cult of St Wenceslas; investiture contest; political and juridical thought in High Middle Ages; Thomas Aquinas on political constitution; the natural law theory of Aquinas; Dante; Marsilius of Padova; Ockham; John Wycliffe; Hussitism.

Learning outcomes
The course concerns the period of political thought from early Christianity to 15th century; it concentrates on the relationship between state and church, and - in particular - on the political and legal theory of Thomas Aquinas.
Student acquires knowledge of the main political ideas of the respective periods, basic orientation in distinctive political topics of given period; ability of analyzing and interpreting a medieval text; capability to identify historical roots of some important political questions of present times (e.g. relationship between state and church, idea of natural law etc.).

Special preconditions are not required.

During semester the student constantly follows the lectures and is interested in the discussed topics. He/she collaborates actively in seminar. The final written test consists in two randomly selected questions.
