Topics: 1. The importance of the printing press and the Reformation for the birth of modern media 2. Pursuit of the freedom of speech in 1848, and its manifestation in the world of emerging politically oriented media. 3. Party democracy in the second half of the 19th century and the media as party organs 4. Film and radio as a tool of totalitarian propaganda in the first half of the 20th century 5. Changes in party paper in independent paper - the media as "watchdog" of democracy 6. Media as a part of market economy - media focus on consumer segments, criteria for evaluating the success of the media market. 7. Risks and the media, depending on market and economic success; the birth of the idea of public service media 8. Media propaganda and manipulation - elements of hidden advertising and PR. 9. Electronic media (radio, television, the internet) as a specific phenomenon of mass communication. 10. Significant differences between verbal and visual reporting with particular emphasis on possible manipulation (with a reader, listener, viewer). 11. Production elements in media reporting and their acceptability. 12. Dual system in the electronic media - the reasons for formation, pros, cons (this part will deal with the question whether the basic intention to separate the media from the influence of media policy was fulfilled)

The course will get students acquainted with the role of the media in today's global, market-oriented world, specifics of the media, the meaning, the pros and cons of the dual system of electronic (and Internet) media, will get students oriented in the world of media based on the knowledge of the historical development of the media and their role in changes in society. The course will develop the ability to distinguish the manipulation from honest reporting.
Students will learn to analyze media products in terms of their relevant content, can recognize elements of manipulation and hidden advertising. They will be able to identify the boundary of acceptable amount of production elements used in the news, get oriented in the media world, without having purposeless prejudice (each type of media is in a free market-oriented society reasonable). Learning outcomes: students will acquire the following academic knowledge: - an overview of the origin and development of media in the course of time and the transformation of the media world after 1848 in Central Europe - an overview of the bearing of the media in a market economy, about its pros and cons and threats to the independence of the media - an overview of the importance of the invention and development of electronic media and the reasons for the formation of a dual media system - a general overview of the development of relations between the media and politics |
