Topics: - Solidarity as a manifestation of honest Christianity. - The birth of social issues in the 19th century. - Criticism of Christian social teaching, solving social issues with liberal and Marxist concepts. - The importance of private property, its integrity and its natural order. - Responsible ownership as a sign of solidarity with the impoverished. - Work as an expression of human emancipation, while its duplicity in the form of political instrumentalization. - Degradation of man to labour as the basis of exploitation and alienated labour (labour power as a commodity). - Wages as a sign of complicity in business - the birth of the idea of participatory economy. - Role of state in a social issue and the use of principle of subsidiarity. - Social prevention instead of welfare provision. - Role of unions and employers' associations in the public space and social issues. - Collective negotiations as a manifestation of social harmony between labor and capital. - Estate rules: an attempt to humanize market economy, or the path to the elimination of democracy? - The crisis of welfare state as a result of globalization and its possible solutions in the point of view of Christian social teaching. - Can social politics be conforming to the market?

The aim of the seminar is to teach students how to work with the texts of political philosophy - with selected topics - as journalists or as political advisors. They should be able to analyze a specific theoretical text, find its idea sources and change them into a generally understandable form, applicable to the needs of political journalism, or for the purpose of a political program so that the theoretical postulates are in newly created texts materialized in concrete steps of civil society. The aim of analysis is to become oriented in theoretical texts, published in prestigious European revue (it will put emphasis on the closest political thinking, i.e. German), but also a major programmatic speeches of prominent European politicians and political agendas of major European political parties. Students will get acquainted with texts of political philosophy and interpret the concept of European Christian Democracy and Social Democracy. They will get analytical skills (needed for quality journalism, to formulate a political party program), capable of getting rid of the ideological view of the world and at the same time will be able to understand.
Learning outcomes: students will acquire the following knowledge: - an overview of social issues from the point of view of Christian social teaching - an overview of critical delimitation in relation to "competitive" solutions of social issues (Marxist and liberal) - an overview of the use of knowledge of Christian social teachings into practical politics of the welfare state of different in political orientation. |
