Topics: - Freedom, justice and solidarity - the core values of Christian democratic and social democratic political thinking. - Liberal democracy and its risks. - Legal state and democracy. - The roots of Czech political tradition (Kollár, Havlíček, Palacký, Masaryk, Soukup). - Political extremism as a boundary criterion of democracy. - The idea of European unification in politics of Social and Christian Democrats. - European Union - a superstate, or national community of democratic states. - Lei culture or multiculturality (there is a European identity). - Challenges of globalized capitalism and social market economy. - The crisis of the welfare state and its possible solutions. - Christian social teachings (the basis of European social model). - Norm-setting of religion in politics (Habermas, or Ratzinger?).

The aim of the seminar is to teach students how to work with the texts of political philosophy - with selected topics - as journalists or as political advisors. They should be able to analyze a specific theoretical text, find its idea sources and change them into a generally understandable form, applicable to the needs of political journalism, or for the purpose of a political program so that the theoretical postulates are in newly created texts materialized in concrete steps of civil society. The aim of analysis is to become oriented in theoretical texts, published in prestigious European revue (it will put emphasis on the closest political thinking, i.e. German), but also a major programmatic speeches of prominent European politicians and political agendas of major European political parties. Students will get acquainted with texts of political philosophy and interpret the concept of European Christian Democracy and Social Democracy. They will get analytical skills (needed for quality journalism, to formulate a political party program), capable of getting rid of the ideological view of the world and at the same time will be able to understand.
Learning outcomes: students will gain the following knowledge: - an overview of how various political values and traditions are reflected in concrete political actions and programs. - an overview of how various political values and traditions, generally shared, transform into political programs of specific orientation. |
