The course consists in a detailed seminar reading of Jan Patočka's lecture course Socrates.
This is a skills-oriented course, which in addition provides a certain knowledge bonus. Students gain confidence to read somewhat difficult texts, learn to formulate their thoughts, to express themselves clearly, to listen to others with understanding. While summarizing the content of the previous class, students take a step towards philosophical writing. At the same time, they get well acquainted with Patočka's interpretation of Socrates, which is an important component of Patočka's conception of philosophy in general and of its life-relevance (and appears to function motivationally as well). |
