Course content
Topics of the lectures: 1. Theoretical aspects and starting points of iconography and iconology 2. Early Christian iconography 3. Medieval Christian iconography - new topics of medieval iconography 4. Marian iconography, Christological iconography 5. Saints - examples to be followed 6. Czech pantheon 7. Order iconography 8. Lutheran iconography 9. Greek Orthodox and Orthodox Church 10. Ancient mythology, Greek and Roman pantheon 11. Mythological-historical topics 12. Renaissance literature as a source of visual art, personification and allegory, emblematic. 13. - 14. Interpretation of chosen art works

Learning outcomes
The subject of the course is to introduce the students to historical development of the subject of Christian iconography and to the basic topics of iconography in the theoretical and applied level. The accent is on Czech and Central European surrounding and the topics are selected carefully so that the skills can be used in future profession. Part of the course is learning the wide range of iconographic handbooks and lexicons.
The student will acquire the knowledge of the basics of iconography, of historical development of this discipline and the main Christian topics in visual art. He can identify the motives, attributes, figures and symbols. He knows his way in the scientific literature and is able to use it individually. The gained knowledge he can apply in practice, i.e. in scientific research of various orientation. He can characterize selected topics and scenes of Christian iconography, outline its historical background, chronology of its development, identify the main figures and characterize them historically and in meaning. Further he can analyze each attribute and type of depicting. He also knows the historical development of each Christian denomination.
Prerequisites
1. For the credit of this course there is not necessary to absolve any previous discipline. However it is useful to have some of the Bachelor courses of history of visual art of history of culture. 2. To finish the course there are no special knowledge or skills needed.
