The aim of the course is to introduce students into the topic of the coexistence of the Czechs and Germans in the Bohemian Lands between 1848-1947. The beginning of this period, the revolution year 1848, marks the completion of the formation of two modern nations. The end poses the expulsion of the Germans from Czechoslovakia after World War II. The course will be concerned with the development of the Czech-German relations during these 100 years. Attention will be paid to political events with impact on the Czech-German relations but also to economic, social and cultural aspects. Particular topics will always be presented generally and then selected ones will be analysed in detail through work with respective sources and literature.
Students will generally understand the development of the Czech-German relations in the Bohemian Lands in the given period. They will deepen their knowledge of the general principles of nationalism in the 19th and 20th centuries. They will have better understanding of the history of the Bohemian Lands, especially of the frontier region then settled mostly by the German speaking population. They will gain experience in working critically with sources. They will be informed about Anglo-Saxon, German and Czech literature on the history of Bohemian Lands and Czech-German relationships. |
