Learning outcomes
In the past, numerous analytical exact methods were applied in disciplines such as art history or archeology. Their applications have shown that they can be very useful for recognizing or evaluating a wide range of aspects that can not be studied solely through traditional style analysis. This shift has made it possible for both disciplines to focus on the previously unsolved problems of the lives of past civilizations and communities related, for example, to craft production, architecture, art work etc. The application of these methods has also enabled, in some cases, to identify artifacts claimed as original and authentic works of art as modern fakes. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basics of these exact analytical methods, as well as to new interdisciplinary methodological procedures which are different from standard stylistic analysis. Thanks to the synergy of scientific and historical (or artistic and historical) research, it is not only possible to confirm, correct or refute various deep-rooted ideas about the works of art and their origins, but mainly to look at the history of art in new contexts - in connection with the development of craft and artistic techniques, with availability, mining or material production and so on. These methods can make a significant contribution to improving knowledge as such and gaining a more realistic view of the past.
