Course content
1. Art collectorship and sponsorship: general tendencies in the development in Czech lands 2. Art collections of the Prague castle and their fate in the period of Baroque 3. Art collections and sponsorship of Czech aristocracy - general trends. 4. Art collections and sponsorship of Czech aristocracy - development of selected collections on the example of the Valdštejn's/ Wallenstein's (Duchcov, Mnichovo Hradiště), Kolowrat's (Palace in Prague, Rychnov nad Kněžnou), Špork's (F. A. Špork and J.R. Špork), Vunšvic (Vunšvic' museum), Gallas'. 6. Art collections and sponsorship of the Czech clergy - general trends and development of specific collections on the example of the bishops of Prague and Litoměřice, Benedictine abbey Břevnov-Broumov. 7. Art collections and sponsorship of Prague patriciate - general trends and development of specific collections. 8. Peculiarities of Baroque iconography - painted galleries, design of library halls and other monastery spaces. 9. Beginnings of interest in art work in printed production - Bohuslav Balbín, František Martin Pelcl, Jaroslav Schaller, Jan Jakub Quirin Jahn, Gottfried Johann Dlabacž.

Learning outcomes
To introduce the students to the general conditions of origination of art collections in the Baroque period (about 1620 to 1780) in Czech lands in various surroundings (the king's collection at the Prague castle, collections of aristocratic families, Church institutions and wealthy bourgeois). Description and analysis of typical and atypical examples of building and maintaining of these collections in the context of Central Europe. In the lectures and seminars we will analyse social, economic and aesthetic background of origination of art collections and their changes and their possible decline while using the statement of the work of art itself as well as various kinds of written and literary sources. The students also acquire an overview of the possibilities of use and interpretation of written sources for recognizing of art collections and practical skills in work with these documents. Special attention will be paid to the form of gallery installations, care of the art works and care of the visitors. In short we will discuss the oldest evidences giving information about art collections.
The student will be able to individually seek, analyze and interpret written documents on the history of art collection in the Baroque period and with this knowledge he will be able to recognize the character of the collection and put it into the context of development of art collectorship. Then he will be able to characterize the person of the collector, his motives and ways in which the collectors got hold of the art works.
Prerequisites
To complete the course means to manage the basic course of History of Czech Visual Art as well as the course of Czech History of Early Modern Age.

During the semester the student should - from the point of literature and archival sources - learn to describe and analyse one general topic (e.g. written sources of family archives to analyse the art collections of aristocracy in the second half of the 17th century; changes of Baroque art collections of the nobility in the 1st half of the 18th century) and one specific topic (e.g. analysis of the inventory of intangible assets of a given aristocrat of church institution). On the ground of the lectures and reading the students should be able to discuss the topics prepared by their colleagues.
