Course content
Topics of the lectures (each will take approximately two classes): 1. Gothic art - general characteristic of the style 2. Gothic art in France - architecture 3. Gothic sculpture in France 4. Painting in France and International Gothic 5. Dutch painting in the 15th century 6. Gothic art in Europe 7. Gothic style in Germany 8. Gothic style in Italy.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce the students to the changes of European Gothic art from its beginning until Late Gothic. The changes of each of the art fields (architecture, sculpture, painting and applied art) are set into context of a specific historical situation and confronted with the changes of period philosophy so that the style and content correlations of the preserved monuments would uncover the character of the period in the most comprehensive way. Wide context of European Gothic is explained with respect to the character of Gothic art in Czech countries. We pay attention to the origination of Gothic art, its spiritual sources and starting points, further we explain in detail the French cathedral and Gothic on monasteries. Then we will interpret Gothic art in each European country.
The student acquires detailed knowledge of European Gothic architecture, sculpture and painting which he can use in his future expert specialization. He is able to define the term Romanesque style, speak about its periods, about the differences of each cultural region, list the most important monuments of this period and identify them from pictorial materials.
