Course content
Topics: 1. Place of ethnology in antropology studies 2. Selected schools and personalities of British social antropology, US culure antropology and French ethnology 3. Development of Czech ethnography as a part of emacipation of Czech nation. Organization of collections and importance of ethnographic exhibitons. 4. Social groups and roles: ethnic group, nationality, nation, family relations, interest groups. 5. Culure and subculture. Social structures and rituals. Perception of space and time. 6. Historic development of s.c. traditional culture ( magic-cosmological, church-religious and social-distinctive systems). 7. Spiritual manifestations of culture. Folklore. 8. Material manifestations of culture. Dress, architecture, art. 9. Ethnic composition and culture spheres of Europe. 10. Migration: Emigracy and immigracy in Czech history. 11. Minorities in the Czech Republic. 12. Methods and techniques of field research I. 13. Methods and techniques of field research II.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to get the students acquainted with theories and methodological processes of the subject, to present review of development of the Czech ethnograhic movement and research since 1890´s until today in the context of the Central Europe. In selected fields of Czech folk culture the course informs about the present state of knowledge. In the seminars students learn basic practical skills necessary for field research: rules of the contact with respondents, making questionnaires and survey and research documentation. The lectures focuse both on spiritual folk culture (f.e. folk music, dance and literature , family rituals, folk religiosity , traditional medicine ) and material culture ( f.e. folk architecture, agriculture, handcrafts, traditional diet etc.)
The student gains basic knowledge of hstory and special characteristics of the subject, knows conditions, means and ways of forming social groups, reflects their dynamics. The student is able to gain and interpret chosen information on the base of knowledge of methods and research techniques of their culture manifestations. Completion of the course consists of class ticket and exam: exam: hand in and defend a seminar paper relating to etnic processes based on one of the fied research techniques. class ticket: presentation (15min.) on chosen topic based on critical evaluation of recomended literature

1. Completion of the course is not subjected to the prior completion of other courses. 2. Excerpts and evaluation of texts.
