Course content
1. Pictures and their function in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The evolution of the understanding of function of religious picture in European surrounding. Iconoclastic - in Byzantium, in Hussitism, in Calvinism of the 16th century, Trident council and the issue of religious pictures. 2. Painting and graphic techniques in European art from the Middle Age till Modern Era; the statement of an art work as a material artefact, development of thinking about renewing art works, dendro-chronology. 3. Pictures of saints and national patrons in Czech lands and in Europe from the Middle Age till Modern Era. 4. National myths and legends in Czech art 5. Political ideas, allegories and propaganda in the art of Middle Ages. 6. Czech Baroque Gothic and political ideas of the Czech Baroque - ideological preconditions, social context of the phenomenon 7. National myths and legends in the art of "great" European nations in the 19th century. 8. National myths and legends in the art of "smaller" European nations in the 19th century. 9. Motives of work and the history of everyday life in the art of European Middle Ages 10. Motives of work and the history of everyday life in the art of early Modern Ages and Modern Era. 11. Learning outcomes
The goal is to introduce the possibilities of interpretation of art works as proofs of political, social, religious and generally cultural situation of the time and the place of its origination. We will also pay attention to the development of European art, mainly to the beginnings and reception of single art works, to the changes and development of specific art genres (portrait, landscape painting, genre painting). The students will also acquire knowledge of the relationships between artists, customer and wider public, about the development of public and private art collections and about social changes which influenced the origination and further existence of the collections. In the lectures and consequent discussion in the seminars we will analyze the works of art themselves (the pictorial and material sources) but also sources written and literary, and the students then acquire knowledge and skills necessary for interdisciplinary analysis and interpretation of art works and the variability of their reception.
The student can analyze and interpret an art work not only in the context of social situation and artistic development of European art in the wide time span from early Middle Age till today. He is able to compare statements of various kinds of sources, mainly the pictorial and material (art works) as well as written. The student thus prepares himself for the position of a scientific worker and at the same time for the practical functions in the net of state and regional institutions of conservation, archiving and museum orientation. These skills will be of use also to those, students, who will work in printed or electronic media or in private or public funds supporting culture and art activities.
Prerequisites
To absolve this course means to manage the basic course of the history of Czech visual art as well as the course of Czech and General history of Middle Age and Modern Era.

During the semester the student should describe and analyze one general topic and one particular topic on the ground of literature or archive sources. The lectures and recommended literature help students to prepare themselves for discussions on the topics brought up by their colleagues.
