1. Introduction to the issue of towns in the 19 century, presentation of basic literature and resources 2. Town society and its modernization. Change of character of towns in connection with industrial development. 3. Edge social classes 4. Woman in a town versus woman in a country. Connection between urbanization and womenś emancipation 5. Foundation of clubs, function of a club life within modernization of a society 6. Historicist styles in town architecture 7. Fin de Si?cle, architecture on the brink of modernity 8. Changes of town urbanism in the 19 century 9. -10. Architectural changes in Ústí nad Labem in the 19 and in the beginning of the 20 cetury 11. Reflection of world exhibitions in Czech environment. Industrial exhibitions in the Northern Bohemia, formation of regional museums and galleries 12. Excursion - some of architectural exhibitions currently being in progress 13.-14. Presentation of students´ results of research during the course. Interpretation of resources.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this required elective course is to introduce students to the transformation of urban society in the 19th century. The focus will be not onlny on the individual components of urban society, but also on the overall character of the modern city as a structuring unit of social space. The overall concept of the course will be based on the connection between thedevelopment of urban society and the transformation of urban space. The development of architectural forms will also be an important component of the interpretation, with an emphasis on the presentation of the links between style and society. The course will also aim to introduce students to the manifestations of modern nationalism evident in urban space. Special attention will be paid to the North Bohemian region.
By completing the course, the student will gain knowledge about the specific development of urban society in the Habsburg Monarchy, especially during the long 19th century. The student will be able to distinguish the manifestations of modernastion both in the context of the transformation of society and in the development of architecture and urbanism. (S)he is able to desrcibe the development of urban architekcture in the context of the transformation of stylistic forms. They can also identify, describe and integrate the different building types and types typical of urban architecture in the second half of the 19th century. On the basis of the axquired knowledge, he/she will be able to work with the latest professional literature and archival documents related to urganism, the city, urban society and its develpment. An essential outcome of the course is also the students?s ability to compare the specific knowledge acquired with the general development of urban society in the Czech lands and Central Europe, with and emphasis on the territory of the Habsburg Monarchy.

Prerequisites
|
The prerequisite is at least basic knowledge of the historical development of the Czech lands and the Habsburg monarchy during the long 19th century. Furthermore, a basic overview of the development of architectural forms and the overall cultural development of the area. The completion of the course History of the Long 19th Century in the Czech Lands is an advantage.

Assessment methods and criteria

Students are required to have a basic overview of the development of urban society in the sexond half of the 19th century. Furthermore, they should have an orientation in the problems of urban architecture and urbanism at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Credit requirements (optional self-selected): -participation in lectures and excursions min. 80% - preparation of two discussion papers on selected concepts related to individual course topics - independent work and preparation of professional documents useful for specialized architectural websites - final test or colloquial examination
