Course content
1. Periodization of Czech history, different perspectives and opinions (19th/20th century) 2. Early Czech history and its place in the philosophy of Czech history 3. Slavs, Germanic peoples, and current interpretations of the Great Moravian Empire 4. The beginnings of the Czech state and changes in the image of St. Wenceslas in Czech history 5. The relationship of the Czech state to the Empire 6. Ruling dynasties on the Czech throne in the Middle Ages and concepts of their rule (the Přemyslids versus the Luxembourgs) 7. Hussitism as a basic interpretative framework for older Czech history 8. The birth of the estates monarchy and changes in society in the late Middle Ages 9. Crisis phenomena in pre-White Mountain society and research approaches to understanding them 10. Cultural history as a concept for understanding early modern society in the Czech lands 11. The role of the Battle of White Mountain in Czech history 12. The Czech lands after the Battle of White Mountain - social changes, basic concepts of 17th-century history

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to deepen knowledge of medieval and early modern Czech history at the master's level, which requires knowledge of basic factual data, concepts, and fundamental literature on these periods. It focuses on the problematic interpretation of essential topics, incorporates current research findings, and offers students various methodological and interdisciplinary approaches to the interpretation and understanding of the development and functioning of medieval and early modern society.
Students are able to comment on fundamental issues in early Czech history. They are familiar with basic concepts and are able to navigate specialist literature, which they are able to interpret critically. They are able to formulate texts that reflect their own critical opinions. They lead specialist discussions on selected topics.
Prerequisites
There are no exceptions to the general requirements for master's studies.

Students are required to actively participate in classes, study course materials and texts, and discuss them. To receive credit, they must submit a text/presentation on a topic selected from the recommended list, which they will present and discuss.
