Course content
Teaching of the course in full-time form includes the following topics on a weekly basis: 1. History and historical thinking. 2. History, past, history. What is history? 3. Between the past, historiography and memory. Historical consciousness. Collective memory. 4. The historian's methods and his predicament. The ethics of the historian's work. 5. Historical work and historiography. 6. Historical interpretation. Writing history. Traditional forms of history. 7. Relationship of the non-professional public to historiographical production. 8. Microhistory and historical anthropology. 9. Rites of passage - the example of birth. 10. Folk magic of the early modern period. 11. European Reformation - forms and problems. 12. The phenomenon of witchcraft and its transformations in the Middle Ages and early modern period. 13. Model examples of witchcraft I - early examples of Sabbats, Menocchio, Benandanti and others. 14. Model examples of witchcraft II - Chonrad Stoeckhlin.

Learning outcomes
The uniqueness of the course lies in the fact that it is taught in three consecutive semesters and that a large number of experts from different generations of KHI FF UJEP staff participate in its teaching. The course begins with a general introduction to the basic theoretical postulates of historical science and historical writing, and moves on to lessons that provide an introduction to the methods and practices of historical anthropology. In the second semester, it introduces students to the major phenomena of nineteenth-century studies, which are undoubtedly church history, and then emphasizes the possibilities of source research in modern history through oral history. It concludes with an explanation of the latest research topics, which are gender studies and its connection to culture, or pop culture. The three-semester course thus aims to educate MA students about practices of historical work that can be described as traditional, but also about practices that are perceived as modern. It also aims to teach them about the philosophical and historical dimension of the historian's work, as well as the ethical dimension, and to educate them about inspirational sources from the Anglo-American, as well as Central European and French, milieu. The student recognizes well the basic theoretical foundations of 20th century historiography. The student is able to distinguish the basic trends of historical knowledge of the early modern period.
