The classroom-based teaching of this subject covers the following topics on a weekly basis: 1. Structure as a historical source I. Formal manifestations of cultural phenomena - parole and langue. Data and information. 2. Structure as a historical source II. The system and its properties. The Gaussian curve of normal probability distribution. Relations and transformation processes. Entropy and the second law of thermodynamics. 3. Structure as a historical source III. Event and development. Monitoring trends. Traces and relics of the past. 4. Structure as a historical source IV. Structure and texture. Angle and distance of view. 5. Artifact and its properties I. Quantity and quality. Practical function, aesthetic form, social significance, symbolic meaning, appellative and proper name of the artifact. 6. Artifacts and their properties II. Transformational processes. Archaeologization. 7. Description of the system I. Signifié and signifiant. Denotation and connotation. Object and subject. Paradigm. 8. Description of the system II. Sign and symbol. Peirce's relational triangle. Ostension, presentation, and representation. 9. Description of the system III. Type and typology. Abstraction, comparison, dichotomy, scale. 10. Learning outcomes
|
The content of the course focuses on the study of the theoretical aspects of architectural history. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic theories and methodological procedures of documentation, analysis, and interpretation of cultural information contained in material historical sources. The course focuses primarily on the issue of information contained in disappearing artifacts, and in selected areas, it familiarizes students with the current state of knowledge, especially in the methodology of the field of architectural history.
Students will gain knowledge in the field of historical science theory and methodology. They will learn basic methods of working with historical artifacts and acquire basic skills for their analysis and interpretation.

Assessment methods and criteria
|

Requirements for obtaining credit: Attendance at seminars must be at least 80%; the second requirement is the independent completion of a seminar paper. Requirements for students during the exam: Knowledge and skills will be tested in the form of a written test. In the written test, graduates will demonstrate the use of Harris's developmental diagram in the analysis of stratigraphy in the representation of findings from archaeological research, findings from operational research and documentation, or architectural-historical research.
