The lectures will teach students the basics of history in a few topical units: 1 Organization of seminars, short overview of single topics, basics of university studies 2. History and its position in the system of sciences, basics of historical thinking 3. Excursion in Ústí nad Labem 4. Institutions dealing with study, teaching history and protecting cultural heritage. 5. Scientific literature, historical periodicals, libraries and bibliographic data, basics of work with scientific literature. 6. Practical work with literature - review, report, paper, expert study 7. Sources, their systematization, saving 8. Work with the sources - heuristics 9. Work with the sources - critique, interpretation 10. Practical exercise with sources 11. Basics of historical terminology I 12. Basics of historical terminology II 13. Basics of methodology 14. Current trends in historical research

Learning outcomes
|
The course will introduce the students to history as a modern science which has its systematic, its goals and its subject of study. It uses specific working methods in applying the sources. The subject should show the students of the first year that history is not a static science which offers only static factual information but that it is a dynamic science which can mediate a plastic picture of our past. Along with the work of historian the subject will teach the students the basic terminology of historical science.
The student understands the basic methodology in historical work. He can delimit the relationship of historical science and other sciences whose outputs and methods it uses. The student can manage the basics of the work of an historian. He knows historical periodicals and can work with scientific literature. He can categorize basic sources. He knows the most important institutions dealing with history studies.

Assessment methods and criteria

Active approach of the student in the courses. Finishing the tasks. Successful elaboration of four tasks on discussed topics. The knowledge will be tested in final written test.
