0. Film and film history as a discipline. 1. The emergence and development of cinematography to the emergence of sound film. 2. Sound film and its subsequent development up to the 1960s. 3. The development of Czech (Slovak) cinema until the end of the 1960s. 4. The development of Czech "historical" film and reflection of major historical events - including Hussitism and the "Dark Ages". 5. Reflection of totalitarianism in Czechoslovak film.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the main chapters of the development of world and Czech cinemain the 20th century. Emphasis will be placed on key periods in the development of film in the context of political and social development (avant-garde, the emergence of totalitarian states, propaganda in film, World Wa II, Czechoslovak cinema in the 1950s and 1960s). At the same time, students will learn how historical events were depicted in cinema.
After completing course, students know the main stages in the development of world and Czech cinema. They can identify the main trends in the history of cinema, are familiar with the basic works of cinema and can evaluate their significance. They understand film as a historical source, can basically assess its aesthetic qualities, but at the same time perceive and analyse it in relation to the historical events depicted. Tehy understand the role of political or social order in the creation of specific film works and can identify the means to influence the viewer or to ideologically strengthen the ruling power. They are able to participate and engage in debate and discussion in an informed manner. They know the basic literature on film history and the institutions that deal with film and film history.

Participating in classes and at the same time extended preparation in the form of watching recommended films is essential for passing this course. And then participation in the discussion and analysis of individual films and film samples. Mandatory output is an essay.
