Learning outcomes
During the course, students will become familiar with the software environment of ArcGIS by ESRI, as an example of a commercial GIS that is widely used in the Czechia. In addition to ArcGIS, students are introduced to other similar programs, particularly from the range of freeware products. The core philosophy of the course is the representation of reality in a digital environment. The entire process of creating a map output directly within a GIS is coveredfrom data acquisition to visualization. Practical sessions focus primarily on the creation of choropleth maps, cartograms, and other thematic maps, especially in relation to topics chosen by students for their individual projects. The main output of the course is a semester project, ideally based on real-world applications. At the end of the semester, students present their projects to their peers.
The course builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in the Geographical Cartography course; however, its completion is not a prerequisite. In the follow-up course GIS I, students will develop the ability to independently create cartographic outputs within a GIS environment.
