Course content
Topics of the lectures: 1. - 2. Basic characteristics and the subject of the study 3. - 4. History of research and development of the subject from the beginnings to becoming a scientific discipline. 5. - 6. Basic chronological and cultural dividing of the development of prehistoric and antique civilizations - terminology 7. - 8. An overview of development of tangible and intangible culture of prehistoric and antique populations 9. - 10. The history of burial ritual 11. - 12.Methods of archaeological research 13. - 14. An overview of the most important archaeological scientific literature in Czech Republic and abroad.

Learning outcomes
The course should introduce the issue of the study of Prehistoric and Classical archaeology. The course wants to give the students the basic information about the structure of both subjects, of their position amongst other humanitarian subjects or the use of both of them in practice. Part of the course is learning about the history of the subject from their early beginnings until their acceptation as scientific disciplines. We will also explain the development of prehistoric and "classical" communities in their natural surrounding from the point of view of "archaeological" tangible and intangible culture, which is the basis of reconstruction of anthropogenic activities in both subjects during the prehistoric or antique period.
After doing the course the student is able to have a basic idea of the goals or objects of the study as well as the methodology of work or other important aspects connected to the subject. The student understands the basics of historical development in prehistoric and antique period. The student is able to make use of his knowledge when he later joins an organization working in the field of archaeological conservation, etc. If the student has a job in an organization whose activities are in the study of history, his knowledge of the basics of archaeology can help him judge and solve various problems from a wide point of view or from time context.
