Course content
The structure of the studied material is adjusted to the used textbooks and other manuals with concern to the specific focus and aims of the studies.

Learning outcomes
1st semester: The aim is to broaden and strengthen the students? basic knowledge of lexically grammatical rules of Latin language and make students acquire deeper knowledge of Latin morphology as well as of the basics of Latin syntax, which assumes previous graduation from the basic course Latin Language I, II. It is, however, always necessary to take the real condition of students? initial knowledge of the basics of Latin language into account. Apart from adopting normative grammar and more general Latin vocabulary, emphasis is mainly laid on the requirements of a historian?s work, and increased attention is thus paid to the development of Latin in the post-classical period and to the characteristic types of the contemporary texts. The organization of the education departs from the basic division of grammatical explanations and training texts into individual lessons according to the used basic Latin textbooks (J. Zachová, Latin for High Schools), while working with appropriately adapted excerpts of more continuous Latin texts is practiced when necessary. 2nd semester: The aim of the follow-up course is to guarantee broader knowledge and skills with regard to the needs of a historian?s work and the related requirements and demands. In connection with acquiring basic orientation in Latin medieval studies, attention is paid to the changes in the structure of Latin in the post-classical period - in the sphere of vocabulary (the influences of Greek and Hebrew), morphologically orthographic, syntactically stylistic and other new features of the language. Primary focus belongs to the types of the contemporary sources and to the expressions of medieval literature as well as to Latin literature of the following periods. Apart from working with textbooks and other manuals, space is given to the work with more continuous Latin texts. Besides anthologies and written edition sources, student and employ databases accessible on the internet. Becoming familiar with documentary and narrative sources (chronicles, hagiographic works), the basic expressions of Latin epigraphy and various types of relics of both local and European provenance helps develop a natural link to auxiliary historical sciences.
1st semester: The graduates have basic knowledge of Latin grammar, can work with dictionaries and elementary Latin handbooks and manuals, can determine the basic grammatical forms and have qualified orientation in a Latin text. Either independently or with minor support, they can arrive at reliable analysis of continuous Latin sentences and at explaining Latin texts from easier to medium-difficulty level. 2nd semester: The graduates have acquired deeper knowledge of Latin grammar, can use corresponding dictionaries and manuals and are well orientated in Latin texts. They can translate medium-difficulty Latin texts in the extent necessary for understanding their meaning and, for the needs of satisfactory explanation and interpretation, can also handle more difficult texts. They are able to further develop the achieved preconditions via self-study and to use them in their future studies as well as in their historical work.

Students are required to understand selected types of Latin texts on the example of excerpts which they can independently translate, explain from the aspect of language and grammar and factually interpret.
