Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to make students familiar with the basics of history of both manuscripts and printed books. In connection with this subject, attention is subsequently paid to the history of libraries in the Czech lands and in Central and Western Europe during Middle Ages and early modern times. The students are also introduced to basic terminology and the basics of describing manuscripts and old prints as well as to the practice of operation of professional facilities holding historical book collections. The education is carried out in the form of lectures accompanied by data-projection.
The graduates are fluent in describing manuscripts and old prints and are orientated in various types of cataloguing records as well as currently valid national and international standards of cataloguing manuscripts and old prints. They have basic knowledge of the development of book culture in the "Latin" cultural sphere of Europe in close relation to the history of culture and communication and have acquired knowledge of the most significant historical book collections and the basic professional literature concerning the given discipline.

Prerequisites

The attendees are required to 1. have passed the subjects Palaeography I and Diplomatics I. 2. have knowledge of German language and basic orientation in history of medieval culture and education.

The basic preconditions of graduating from the course is, mainly, active participation at seminars and then passing the final written test departing from the circles of issues discussed during both the attendance and distance part of study. Another precondition is submitting a review of a selected title of topical professional (either local or foreign) literature from the field of history of book culture or, respectively, from a wider circle of new cultural history on the subject of book history, education etc.
