Course content
1. A general introduction, an introduction to the conditions and progression of the course, an introduction to the topic, basic literature and source. 2. Issues relating to the study of material culture of pre-modern, modern and contemporary history, sources, methods. 3. Industrialisation, the transformation of everyday life in the nineteenth century. 4. Everyday life and lifestyle in the 20th century 5. Consumption, shopping, advertising 6. Housing, health care, hygiene 7. Childhood, old age and death; religion 8. Clothing 9. Leisure time 10. The military 11. Travel, social life 12. Material culture of modern and contemporary history in Czech museum collections 13. Tour of the "Our Germans" exhibition in Ústí nad Labem 14. Final lesson, evaluation

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with the development of material culture in pre-modern, modern and contemporary history, roughly from the 18th century to the end of the 20th century. The history of material culture will be presented in close connection with changes in everyday life and lifestyle, and at the same time set in the broader context of social, cultural, economic and political development at the tima. The focus will be primarily on the Czech lands, but the connections with general developments will also by systematically monitored. The development of material culture will be demonstrated through specific objects found in the collections of Czech and foreign museums.
Students learn in detail about the development of material culture of pre-modern, modern and contemporary history. They deepen their knowledge of everyday life and lifestyle in the 18th to 20th centuries. They are able to assess the history of material culture in the broader context of social, cultural, economic and political developments of the time. They gain an overview of important objects in collections of Czech and foreign museums.
