1. Renaissance architecture of Europe - basic typology of buildings and structures, characteristic elements, centres. 2. The Proto-Renaissance and the beginnings of the Renaissance under the Jagiellonians. 3. Renaissance architecture of Bohemia, Moravia adn Bohemian Silesia in the first half of the 16th century. 4. Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with the basic points and features of the development of historical architecture over a time span from the beginnings of the Renaissance to the Baroque, with an emphasis on the historical development of domestic architecture in the general context of European historical and cultural development. The chronological overview of the development of architecture includes the main developmental features, the characteristics of architecture of a given style, an overview of the most important buildings, and an introduction to the historical framework influencing the development of architecture in the relevant time period.
The student gains a basic overview of the development of Renaissance and Baroque architecture in Bohemia, Moravia and Bohemian Silesia. They learn about the typology of Renaissance and Baroque buildings and their construction. They are able to classify Renaissance and Baroque buildings in Bohemia, Moravia and Bohemian Silesia on the basis of their distinctive architectureal features. The students gains a basic oveview of the major centrs of Renaissance and Baroque architecture in Europe.

Assessment methods and criteria

Attendance at class with a maximum of three absences, study of the literature, preparation and presentation of a paper, preparation of a seminar paper, successful completion of the exam. In the paper, the student presents one selected building type, Renaissance or Baroque, with an emphasis on its architectural features and its function. In the seminar paper, the student describes the compostion, layout and facade of a selected Renaissance or Baroque building using the literature. The text is accompanied by an illustrative photographic appendix.
