1. The building as a historical source. 2. Prehistoric buildings of Europe - basic typology of structures, settlement and building types. 3. Prehistoric architecture of Bohemia and Moravia. 4. Ancient architecture - Greece and Rome - basic features. 5. Early Christian architecture. 6. Pre-Romanesque architecture of the Early Middle Ages and Great Moravia. 7. Romanesque architecture of Europe. 8. Romanesque architecture of Bohemia. 9. Gothic of European centres - basic overview and characteristics. 10. The beginnings of Gothic and Early Gothic under Přemysl Otakar II. 11. The advent of High Gothic under Václav II. 12. High Gothic during the reign of the Luxembourgs. 13. Late Gothic at the court of the Jagiellonians. 14. Saxon-type Late Gothic in NW Bohemia.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with the basic points and features of the development of historical architecture over a tima span from prehistory to the Gothic period, with an emphasis on the historical development of domesstic architecture in the general context of European historical and cultural development. The chronological overvirw of the development of architecture includes the main developmental features, the characteristics of architecture of a given stile, an overview of the most important buildings, and an introduction to the historical framework influecing the development of architecture in the relevant time period.
The student gains a basic overview of the development of prehistoric and ancient, pre-Romanesque, Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Bohemia, Moravia and Bohemian Silesia. They learn about the typology of buildings and their construction. They are able to classify the relevant types of architecture in terms of style, and describe and classify individual structures on the basis of their distinctive architectural features.

Assessment methods and criteria
|

Attendance at class with a maximum of three absences, study of the literature, preparation and presentation of a paper, successful completion of the credit exam. In the paper, the student presents, in the form of a presentation with their own photographic documentation, one selected building type with an emphasis on its architectural features and its function.
