Course content
Subjects of the individual lectures: 1. The Czech lands during the period of the arrival of the Slavs and the issue of the so-called Great Moravian Empire 2. The beginnings of the Bohemian state and the so-called Boleslav empire of the earliest Premyslides, the first crisis of the Bohemian state 3. The Czech lands during the early Middle Ages, the quest of the Bohemian dukes for the royal crown 4. Bohemia under the Premyslide kings and the so-called great transformation of the medieval society 5. The Premyslide heritage and the first Luxemburgs on the Bohemian throne 6. The development of the Crown of the Kingdom of Bohemia, the Bohemian state during the high Middle Ages and its problems 7. The causes, progresses and results of the Hussite wars 8. The path to the Estates? monarchy - the development of the Bohemian state in the post-Hussite wars period 9. "Bohemian national monarchy" - monarchy during the period of George of Poděbrady 10. The estates? monarchy under the Jagiellonian reign 11. The arrival of the Habsburgs to the Bohemian throne 12. The pre-White Mountain Estates? society (economic, social, religious and cultural aspects of its development) 13. The Estates? opposition and its fight against the ruler (the issue of the so-called Estates? resistance) 14. The second Estates? resistance, the lands of Bohemia in the Thirty Years? War and the evaluation of the "White Mountain" by the hitherto historiography

Learning outcomes
In the framework of introducing to the Bohemian history and the history of the Czech lands, the lectures focus on the period from the arrival of the Slavs to the local territory, the establishment of the first state units, the constitution of the Bohemian medieval state of the Premyslids and the period of its upswing under the reign of the last Premyslids and Luxemburgs to the Hussite revolution, as well as on the crucial moments of Bohemian history from the Hussite wars and the Podiebrad and Jagiellonian periods. Apart from providing basic historical overview, especially the seminars will serve to discuss special problematic subjects and emphasis will also be laid on working with documents dating to the related periods.
The graduates are orientated in the main issues of the Bohemian Middle Ages and the beginnings of the early modern times both from the point of methodology and heuristics. They are familiar with the relevant terminology, basic literature and edition sources related to the given period. They are capable of interpreting the main types of sources and critically evaluating the corresponding literature as well as viewing the development of the earlier Bohemian history in overall European context.
