Course content
1.Introduction to academic literature, sources for the history of clothing, interdisciplinary approaches to history of clothing. 2.Basic parts of clothes in Middle Ages, clothing in the Czech lands in Early Middle Ages. Clothing in Great Moravia and Přemyslid Bohemia. 3.Clothing in the Czech lands in the period of high and late Middle Ages ( clothing culture under the reign of Luxemburgs and during the Hussite Wars) 4.Clothes as a symbol, semiotic function of clothes, clothes as a mean of non-verbal communication. Topics of tutorials: Medieval clothing in Europe, fashion accessories, haircuts, headwears, shoes, fashion transfers, specific local features of clothes.

Learning outcomes
The facultative course "Clothing in the period of Middle Ages" introduces students to the history of European clothing in the period of Middle Ages, particularly focussing on the area of central Europe and the Lands of Bohemian Crown. In the course students will be presented with historical resources which might be used for the study of history of clothing, moreover with approaches or ways of interpretation and with relevance of particular types of resources for history of fashion and clothing. The course provides summary of current research on history of clothing which stands between history of material culture, history of daily life, cultural and historical anthropology, historical sociology, history of mentalitities and others. Students will thus get general knowledge of development of medieval clothing and fashion and at the same time they will learn to understand clothes in a relation to its wearer not only as a "body packaging" but also as a symbolic object and demonstration of culture.
After attending the course students will have knowledge of main stages of development of clothing from the end of Ancient period till the end of Middle Ages. Students will be able to periodically classify the clothes and describe its parts. Moreover students will also learn to distinguish clothes of particular social classes. Apart from that they will understand a symbolic role of clothes in relation to its wearer and a status of this wearer in the society.
