Programme of the course (main topics): 1) History of literature as a scientific discipline, history of literature and its role in the field of history, periodization, etc. The oldest texts of the world literature (Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome) 2) Medieval world literature (Periodization, the Bible - Old and New Testament, basic forms of the medieval literature - heroic epos, court poetry) 3) Older Czech literature I (the oldest literary works, medieval literature and its genres, High Middle Ages) Literature till the end of the 13th century Literature in the High Middle Ages Hussitism and post- Hussite movements 4) Renaissance and Humanism in the European literature: Italy, France, England 5) Older Czech literature II Literature of renaissance and humanism The time after the Battle of White Mountain - exile and domestic literature 6) European literature from Baroque till Enlightenment (Baroque, Classicism, Enlightenment, Pre-Romanticism) The Problematic and character of National Reawakening 7) Romanticism in the world and Czech literature 8) The Realism and Naturalism in the world literature. Learning outcomes |
The course will present a selection from the basic period of the development of Czech and world literature. The main focus is on the development of the Czech literature. The context of the history of the world literature is given in the form of landmarks in the literary development, important directions and specific works which influenced Czech literature. The course will be in the form of seminar where students will be learning to analyze literary texts and to file them into general context. With regard to the overall specialization of the subject of History of culture the students will understand how to make use of a literary work as a historical source (especially in Older Czech literature). The students will be asked to follow important present-day impulses from the literary scene, especially the Czech one.
The student will gain a basic knowledge of the development of Czech and world literature. He can present the all-over development of the literature of Czech lands and describe the main landmarks. He is able to list important works and authors, present main features of their work in context of time and topic. He can easily explain the instances of the Older Czech literature and can asses their importance for the subject of history. |
