The aim of the course is to acquaint graduates with the typology of settlements and buildings of traditional rural society and with the basic tendencies of their building development in the Czech Republic. Emphasis is placed on the individual functional types of buildings, the transformation of their interior furnishings and the traditional structures used. In addition to the practical function, the social significance and symbolic meaning of the buildings and their parts are also examined.
The student learns to observe the reflection of social relations in the formal building structure of rural settlements and buildings. The student gains knowledge of the types of rural settlements and buildings of traditional society and a basic understanding of the cultural areas defined by them. The student will acquire basic competence in the identification, analysis and interpretation of these settlements and buildings. The student will also become familiar with the history and methodology of research on traditional rural buildings and the method of their preservation in the Czech Republic. The student will gain basic competences to assess the value of these buildings as a material historical source. |

| Assessment methods and criteria |

The course requirements consist of two items: an independent presentation of a specified seminar topic and a verification of learning outcomes. The student will present a selected current topic of rural heritage in a lecture followed by a discussion for 20 min. Proof of completion is the submission of the presentation. The method of verification of the learning outcomes is by credit. Knowledge and skills for the credit are tested by means of a colloquial presentation of the above seminar topic and a written test. The student will draw one worksheet from each of the 14 subject areas. Answers to the assignment are written and drawn directly on the worksheet. The instructor may supplement the written portion of the testing with verbal testing in the form of an oral interview. |
