Learning outcomes
The aim is to familiarize students with the principles of creating a professional text, its structure and types, and to learn the rules of ethics of scientific work. To master the work with bibliography, citations and sources, including the historical method. Understand specific historical methods. Gain an overview of current trends in historical research, its methodological diversity and the possibilities of professional application in academic and popular settings.
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to: -understand the basic rules of preparation of a professional text, its types and ethical principles of scientific work -explain the principles of historical method and the correct handling of sources and literature, including the rules of bibliographical citation -describe and distinguish between different research approaches in historiography and apply basic methods -reflect on the possibilities and limits of popularising history and its representation in popular culture -orientation in the ways of academic communication, functioning of scientific and professional institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad -evaluate the importance of bohemian research and opportunities for study or research in an international context

Certification will be awarded based on: A) Participation is conditional on credit from the first semester of this course B) Attendance at lectures C) active participation in discussions D) completion of a seminar paper demonstrating the ability to apply historical methods (and others), including the interpretation of two (unpublished or published) historical sources in the context of the latest research. Submission to Moodle as a file (MS Word/OpenOffice) of 10-12 standard pages with 1.5 line spacing, where a standard page = 1,800 characters (including spaces and footnotes). The text should therefore be between 18,000 and 21,600 characters (including spaces and footnotes), font size 12 (serif). The text must be aligned to the block. The footnotes must directly and indirectly cite: at least 2 sources (including contemporary periodicals), 5 specialist books or qualification theses (with scientific apparatus), 1 popular science book, 2 studies from conference proceedings, 1 journal study from WoS or Scopus, 1 journal study from JSTOR. Some items may be replaced with others in agreement with the instructor. Structure: introduction, essay (may be in several chapters), conclusion, list of sources. The introduction must: 1) define the research questions (objectives), 2) evaluate, comment on, and describe the methods used, or classify the text into a methodological "school" and subscribe to methodological "models," 3) evaluate, comment on, and describe the sources, 4) evaluate, comment on, and describe key professional literature, 5) comment on the structure of the work. The list of sources (divided into A) sources, B) professional texts, and footnotes with abbreviated citations) must be in accordance with the conventions specified by the Czech Language Institute. The exam is conditional on a credit from the first semester, fulfillment of the above conditions A-C, and successful completion of a written test. The exam takes the form of a discussion (defense) of a seminar paper corrected and approved by the teacher on methods, research, results, and problems.
