Course content

The combined form of teaching this subject summarizes these topics in individual teaching blocks: 1. Historical demography and historical statistics ? basic concepts and issues 2. Methods of work and sources of historical demography 3. Methods of using statistical work in historical research, procedure and stages of statistical investigation 4. Types of sources and possibilities for their use 5. Transformation of the population of the Czech state As part of their self-study, students deal with topics included in the required reading and, in particular, in the course support materials, assignments given in the classroom or in the Moodle teaching system, and on the basis of individual consultations with the teacher conducted in person, online (blue.ujep.cz) or by correspondence (e-mail).

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic aspects of population development against the background of historical development. Emphasis is placed not only on the typology of sources, but also on the methods of historical demography and historical statistics, including other quantitative methods in historiographical research. Attention will also be paid to the concrete change of the population of the Czech state in historical perspective. The course will also include procedures for creating an electronic database when working with bulk sources.
The graduate demonstrates knowledge of the basic milestones in the development of Czech and world historical demography. He/she can reliably inform about the most important outcomes and can also reliably characterize their significance for the overall understanding of population development and other population characteristics. It can also explain the basic concepts of historical statistics and its application within historical science. The student will acquire knowledge of the typology of basic sources used in historical-demographic research, can determine their value for solving partial problems of historical research and can choose the right approach for data processing. The course will also include procedures for creating an electronic database when working with sources of a bulk nature.
