Course content
1. Introduction to the topic, getting acquainted with the existing professional and primary literature, its specifics 2. Jewish Enlightenment - haskalah (founding father Peter Beer) 3. Jewish issues in Czech and German literature of the first half of the 19th century and the 1848 revolution. Dorfgeschichte. 4. Coexistence of Czech and Moravian Bohemians and Jews through journalism and literature (J. Neruda) 5. Coexistence of Czech and Moravian "Germans" and Jews through journalism and literature (F. Mauthner). 6. Literary and journalistic representations of the Czech - Jewish movement (V. Rakous, E. Lederer, V. Vohryzek) 7. Everyday life of Czech and Moravian Jews of the "long" 18th and the first half of the 20th century: memories and memoirs (N. Frýd) 8.-9. The Prague Circle? Prague Circles? Learning outcomes
Since the early Middle Ages, Jews had been active in the social, political and cultural history of the Czech lands. Through the reading and interpretation of literary and journalistic texts, the seminar will present literary (self-)representations and debates concerning Jews as a confessional and national group in the context of loyalty and identification with a gradually nationalizing environment, with a brief look back at the tragic outcome of their mutual coexistence in the years 1938-1945.
- student obtains basic knowledge about Jewish-Czech-German relations - student begins to orient himself on the perspectives of research - student learns to analyse historical sources and handle secondary literature
