Course content
1. Introduction to German studies: university system and its (self-) administration, study system (STAG, study portal Moodle, system of examinations and final theses), obligations and rights of students 2. Introduction to German Studies: what are its basic areas, the development of German and its varieties. 3. Introduction into the system of the UJEP Academic Library, the Austrian Library (collection of books on Austria and Austrian literature), and the CEPRONIV Methodological and Didactic Library - presentation of basic publications formats (reference book, nonfiction, fiction). 4. Introduction into the system of the departmental media library, research practicing: edition, monograph, conference proceedings, journal. 5. Basic Germanist and library databases, journals, internet dictionaries and encyclopedias. 6. Basic academic formats: handout, paper, review, essay, report, reportage, ppt presentation. 7. Academic writing (basic terminology, objectivity vs. subjectivity), issues of copyright and plagiarism. 8. Introduction to propaedeutics I: citation practice, bibliographic data, footnote, etc. 9. Introduction to propaedeutics II: the format of term paper. Research practice in the media library. 10. German studies in the German-speaking area, German studies in the Czech Republic and in Ústí nad Labem - possibilities and the potential of the region. The importance of Czech-German intercultural competence. 11. Historical memory of the place and the region, Ústí nad Labem tour on Czech-German relations, a visit to the exhibition "Our Germans". 12. Reflection of the visited exhibition. 13. Analysis and evaluation of student work/ outputs for obtaining credit, summary.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students: with the basics of a university study, along with the specifics of German studies, terminology, and the basics of academic research. The course also includes academic excursions that introduce students to Czech-German intercultural contacts in various (especially historico-cultural) contexts.
Students - get acquainted with the specifics of the German Studies, - get acquainted with the basics of academic research, - increase their Czech-German intercultural competences.
