Course content
1. Basic linguistic terms, text vs conversation, spoken vs written language 2. Introduction to spoken language research 3. Conceptuality and mediality: relation between spoken and written language (language of immediacy and language of distance) 4. Language production model, temporality of spoken language 5-8 Lexical and syntactic features of spoken language 9. Phonetic features of spoken language 10-12 Standard variety and other varieties of German 13. Summary and final discussion

Learning outcomes
Students gain an insight into spoken language research and are sensibilized to the fact that spoken language has some special features that are not found in conceptually written language. Please note: The aim of the seminar is not to improve your own oral skills or pronunciation, but to familiarize yourself with the linguistic description of spoken language. Basic prior knowledge of linguistics is an advantage (or a prerequisite).
The student - know the differences between written and spoken language. - know some special features of spoken language and can understand their causes and functions. - can distinguish the standard variety from other varieties of German.
