Course content

1. Linguistics, German studies and Germanic linguistics as academic disciplines. Practical problems on which linguistics is based. 2. Main fields of linguistics. 3. Language in the sense of langage and langue, speech (parole). 4. Definitions of language. 5. Language as a system of signs. Paraverbal and nonverbal components of communication. 6. Speech act. 7. Relationship between language and writing. Orthography and orthographic standard. 8. Language acquisition. Relation between language and thinking. Psycholinguistics and didactics of languages. 9. A brief overview of languages on Earth, and their classification. 10. Common features of languages and their differences, typology of languages. 11. Germanic languages, German as an Indo-European and Germanic language. 12. German and its varieties. Sociolinguistics. 13. Language and its users.

Learning outcomes
|
The course deals with the basic knowledge about the German language and its characteristics from the perspective of individual disciplines of Germanic linguistics. Furthermore, we will learn about the characteristics of languages in general, the main linguistic disciplines, and basic terminology of the field in German and Czech.

Assessment methods and criteria

To obtain credit - Active participation in seminars - Completion of all assignments - Final test (at least 70% of total points) Exam - The exam is oral and lasts about 20 minutes. The examinee draws from predefined circuits and also receives additional questions.
