1. Development of German literature in the Czech lands from the 1st half of the 19th century (K. H. Mácha) 2. The concept of Bohemianism (Bernard Bolzano, Charles Sealsfield) 3. Development of literature after 1848, the revolutionary generation, Jewish assimilation (Leopold Kompert, Siegfried Kapper) 4. Adalbert Stifter and other prose writers of the Bohemian Forest region 5. Realist literature from Moravia (Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Jacob Julius David) 6. Dream world, magic, and imagination (Gustav Meyrink, Alfred Kubin) 7. Prague German literature: the Concordia Group, Verein der bildenden Künstler, Neo-Romantics (Oskar Wiener, Paul Leppin); R. M. Rilke 8. Brod's 'Prague Circle' (Oskar Baum) 9. Expressionism (Franz Kafka, Franz Werfel) 10. Translation work; the Herder-Blätter (Pavel Eisner). 11. Terezín / Theresienstadt Ghetto; poetry 12. Learning outcomes
This course concerns important and lesser-known German works by authors who were born or who worked in the Czech lands. These works are viewed as an important phenomenon of Czech-German-Jewish co-existence. Teaching will be divided up chronologically and topically, spanning the 19th and 20th centuries.
The student - Can orient him/herself in the development of literature from the beginning of the 19th century to the present - Can describe the individual periods and name the main figures - Can independently analyse and interpret a work of literature, place it in its historical, cultural and literary context, and defend his/her opinion of it
