Course content
1. Hermeneutics (Schleiermacher x Gadamer, the hermeneutic circle) 2. Fictionality of a literary text and its function in modern prose, allegorical reading 3. Literature in Germany 1945-49 (Heimkehrerdrama, Kahlschlag-Poesie) 4. German Literature in the 1950s (Kurzgeschichte, Roman-Trilogien) 5. Austrian Literature 1945-1955 (Todesfuge x Konkrete Poesie) 6. German Literature of the 1960s (concept of documentary drama - Peter Weiss) 7. Austrian literature since 1955 - drama (experimental drama - Handke, Parabelstück - Bernhard, postdramatic theater - Jelinek) 8. Austrian literature since 1955 - prose (Jelinek, Bachmann, Menasse, Stavarič) 9. Swiss literature since 1945 (dramatic concepts - Dürrenmatt, Frisch) 10. German Literature of the 1970s and 1980s (short story, novel, autobiographical writing - Martin Walser) 11. Literature of the GDR 1949-1989 (Plenzdorf, Wolf, Hein, Müller) 12. Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide an overview of literary tendencies and the development of German-language literature from 1945 to the present. Students will get acquainted with the most important representatives and key works of contemporary German literature, including the literature of the GDR, Austria and Switzerland. In the field of theory, special attention will be paid to the concept of hermeneutics, literary fiction and its function in modern prose, modern prose and theatrical forms and experimental poetry.
The student is familiar with literary tendencies and the development of German-language literature from 1945 to the present, knows their main representatives and works. The student can interpret the discussed works and contextualize them culturally and historically. S/he masters the basics of hermeneutics and is able to apply the concept of literary fiction to modern forms of texts.
