1.-2. Current trends in the development of lexis I (Neologisms of the 1990s and those of the 1st and 2nd decades of the 21st century) 3-4. Current trends in the development of lexis II (the role of the lexical language in contemporary German, Anglicisms in contemporary German, the influence of the Anglo-American perception on the meaningful shift of some words) 5-6. Current trends in the use of selected grammatical phenomena I (influence of Anglo-American boundary on German morphology and the use of selected syntactic constructions) 7-8. Current tendencies in the use of selected grammar phenomena II (influence of spoken language on literary German) 9.-10. German Institute for the German language in Mannheim: Getting to know its websites and selected projects 11-12. The German Language Society / Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache: its objectives, international activities (with special regard to the Czech Republic) and the magazine Der Sprachdienst

Learning outcomes

This seminar reflects and critically analyses the current trends in contemporary German from the point of view of grammar, lexis and pragmatics, with a special emphasis on lexical innovations over the last 25 years, and aspects of discourse on the role of lexical culture (the intercultural dimension of developmental tendencies). It also provides an overview of the activities of major institutions dealing with contemporary German research as well as the constructive criticism of some developmental tendencies. It also seeks to promote and popularize German in the world.
Students can - critically inspect current trends in contemporary German from the point of view of grammar, lexis and pragmatics and reflect on them; - have an overview of the activities of major institutions engaged in contemporary German research
