Course content
1.-2. Current tendencies in the development of lexis I (neologisms of the 1990s and the first decade of the 21st century) 3.-4. Current tendencies in the development of the lexis II (the role of the adopted lexicon in contemporary German, aspects of the discussion about the role of Anglicisms in contemporary German, the influence of the Anglo-American narrative on the semantic shift of some words); 5.-6. Current tendencies in the use of selected grammatical phenomena I (the influence of Anglo-American use on the morphology of German and on the use of selected syntactic constructions) 7.-8. Current tendencies in the use of selected grammatical phenomena II (influence of spoken language on standard German) 9. Institute for the German Language in Mannheim: introduction to its website, selected projects (for instance GRAMMIS, elexico, E-VALBU, "Lexikalische Innovationen" /Lexical Innovations/, Usuelle Wortverbindungen, SprichWort) and Sprachreport magazine / Society for the German Language / Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache: its goals, international activities (with special regard to the Czech Republic) and the magazine Der Sprachdienst

Learning outcomes
The seminar reflects and critically analyses current development trends in contemporary German from the perspective of grammar, lexis and pragmatics with special attention to lexical innovations in the last 25 years and aspects of the discourse on the role of the adopted lexis (intercultural dimensions of development trends). Furthermore, the seminar gives an overview of the activities of major institutions engaged in research of contemporary German, as well as a constructive critique of some development trends and also seeks to promote and popularize German in the world.
The student attending the course is able to characterize current development trends in contemporary German and shed light on their causes.
