Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to Bernhard Schlink's novel The Reader and its film adaptation, as well as to Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's two post-2000 films, which, like The Reader, deal with the German past. Students will be introduced to the cultural context of these works and the debates and controversies they have generated. Students will further gain insight into the cultural and political context of the period and the ways in which they were reflected upon artistically. In the case of The Reader, a comparison of the text with the film version will illuminate the relationship between the two media and their reception. A connecting theme in the seminar discussions will be the way of historical reflection on World War II and its aftermath, coping with the past and life in the GDR. Furthermore, coping with historical traumas from different cultural positions will be the subject of discussion.
The student can characterize film and literary genres can carry out a basic analysis of works know the cultural and historical background of the texts and films discussed
